Seeking God together in Spiritual Direction

Seeking God Together: A Journey in Group Spiritual Direction

This month marks the beginning of something new: a journey of Group Spiritual Direction.

I have invited five ladies, and with glad hearts, they have each said “yes.” Starting soon, we will gather once a month, in the quiet of our church, for two hours of listening. Not to study. Not to debate. Not to teach. But to be with God together.

The invitation I shared with them was simple:

“The purpose is to create a sacred space where we can listen deeply to God, to ourselves, and to one another. This is not a Bible study or a discussion group. It’s a space where each person is gently invited to share from their own spiritual journey — joys, questions, struggles, or wonderings — while others listen prayerfully and attentively, without judgment or advice.”

At the heart of this practice is a holy conviction: when we are truly heard and loved by others, we become more able to hear and receive God’s presence in our daily lives. From there, we grow in becoming bearers of His grace and love in the world.

I have already begun to pray for these women and to discern what it means to walk together in this way. My heart is full of anticipation and quiet excitement. I can only imagine what God desires to unfold in their lives, in my own, and in the life we will share as a group.

On a recent walk to the beach, I paused to notice the clouds — different in shape, colour, and form — painting a scene of beauty at day’s end. This is my prayer for our group: that as we bring our varied stories, God will weave them into a picture more beautiful than we could imagine, for His glory and our joy.

Reflective Question

Perhaps you’ve never experienced this kind of listening community. What might it look like for you to enter a space where you don’t need to perform, solve, or explain, but only to be open to God’s presence and attentive to another’s story?
